A story about kindness

And the reason I LOVE Supporting small businesses!

Brooklynn had a few special requests for her Birthday yesterday- (more details will follow in later posts),   To have chicken nuggets and mack'n cheese for dinner,  and chocolate cake for dessert.

Easy peasy peasy right!?

So after dropping Ben off at school in the morning Brooklynn and I ran to our small town Grocery store to grab a few things for our day's baking adventures,    and of course, upon walking in we excitedly shared that it was her birthday and she was turning 4.     The manager gave her a high five,  and he and a couple of employees had some fun conversations with her,  and then the manager handed her a basket full of goodies like paints,  sculptures to paint, markers, a journal,  and packs of candy- while wishing her a huge "happy birthday!",      We then continued on with our shopping, and later as we were checking out the employees around stopped to make a big deal of her special day.    Speaking to her by name,  and talking about how old she is,  her cake that she's gonna get,  and made her feel so special.

That's what you get at small local shops.   Personalization.   You're a person with a name.

This particular store gets a lot of flak from many people I know.   The prices are too high, the Food isn't the best and etc... But I can promise you this.  We go to this store all the time,  and we are greeted by a friendly familiar face and spoken to like we matter.    The manager is always approachable and goes out of his way to address us.  And The treatment my little girl got today,  you would NEVER get that at a big-time store.   None of the chain stores barely even bother to smile at us half the time let alone personalize a conversation with my 4-year-old and give her a gift on her birthday.

When we got home,   she was so happy that she painted him a homemade thank you card,  and hand-delivered it later in the day,   As soon as she walked in the store and saw him,  she ran right up to him and gave him her card.    He was so touched and scooped her up in a big hug.

They've secured our business today.   Not because of the gift they gave, but the kindness they showed.
